A Walk Down Memory Lane Saunders on the Glory Day’s 7pm

IslandStats.com
Few moments in Bermuda’s sporting folklore remain as indelible as a sunlit afternoon in Auckland, New Zealand, when Clarence “Nicky” Saunders soared into the record books.

Live tonight at 7:00 pm, Saunders will join us for A Walk Down Memory Lane.

When the high jump bar was raised to an intimidating 2.36 metres at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, Saunders did more than clear the height on his third and final attempt. He captured Bermuda’s first-ever Commonwealth gold medal, broke the Games record, and etched his name among the world's elite in track and field.

More than three decades later, Saunders’ legacy has come full circle. Stepping into the pivotal role of Secretary-General of the Bermuda Olympic Association (BOA), the three-time Olympian is channelling the grit, discipline, and vision that defined his jumping career into guiding the next generation of Bermudian athletes onto the world stage.

Taking a walk down memory lane, Saunders reflects on the soaring peaks, the lessons of defeat, and his enduring mission to give back to the island that cheered his every stride.

Before Auckland 1990, Saunders was already an established force. He took bronze at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane and represented Bermuda with distinction at three Olympic Games—Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, and Barcelona 1992—finishing an outstanding fifth in the Olympic final in Seoul.

Yet, it was the Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland that would define his competitive zenith. Locked in an epic duel with England’s Dalton Grant and Australia’s Geoff Parsons, the pressure mounted with every centimetre added to the uprights.

Saunders' mark of 2.36 metres remains one of the longest-standing records in Commonwealth Games athletics history—a testament to the calibre of the performance.

While the medals and records stand tall, the journey was never without adversity. Navigating the international circuit required immense personal sacrifice, meticulous preparation, and resilience through injury—experiences that now inform Saunders' approach as the BOA's chief administrative officer.

Taking the reins as Secretary-General, Saunders brings an athlete-first perspective to the BOA’s headquarters, ensuring national sports governing bodies receive the support, infrastructure, and international pathway alignment necessary to compete globally.
