Port Royal Gears up for Eighth Bermuda Championship

Canada's Corey Conners
IslandStats.com
Canada's Corey Conners leads the field as the Butterfield Bermuda Championship returns to Port Royal Golf Course for its eighth edition, with FedExCup Fall survival, amateur milestones, and a notoriously unpredictable coastal layout taking centre stage.

Ranked 61st in the world, Conners arrives in Southampton as the highest-ranked player in attendance. The ultra-reliable Canadian, who currently sits 66th in the FedExCup Fall standings, has made the cut in 39 of his last 41 starts on the PGA Tour.

He faces a venue that continues to punch well above its weight. Despite measuring as the shortest course on the 2025 PGA Tour schedule, Port Royal's exposed Atlantic layout ranked as the 14th most difficult test of 49 courses on Tour last year.

History suggests early leaders should beware: none of the seven previous champions ever held the outright lead on Thursday. In fact, every single winner at Port Royal has come from three or more strokes behind after the opening 18 holes, and the tournament has never produced a wire-to-wire champion. An elusive first hole-in-one at the event also remains up for grabs.

Five former winners are back to challenge for a second title, including defending champion Adam Schenk (2025), Rafael Campos (2024), Camilo Villegas (2023), Seamus Power (2022), and inaugural 2019 victor Brendon Todd.

Ireland's Power remains the benchmark in Bermuda scoring. During his 2022 triumph, he set the tournament record with 28 birdies and became the only player in tournament history to birdie the cliffside, par-three 16th hole across three consecutive rounds.

Course specialist Vince Whaley returns looking to convert past form into crucial FedExCup points. Whaley, currently 175th in the standings and fighting for status, boasts four top-10 finishes across five visits, including a share of third last year.

Austin Smotherman arrives as the solitary PGA Tour winner from the current season in the field following his breakthrough at the Bank of Utah Championship.

International form is also well represented by 23-year-old Japanese talent Ren Yonezawa. A three-time winner on the Japan Golf Tour, Yonezawa punched his ticket to Bermuda courtesy of a tie for ninth at the Baycurrent Classic a fortnight ago.

Much of the spotlight will fall on 20-year-old amateur sensation Kihei Akina. The Hawaiian earned his spot via a ninth-place finish at the Bank of Utah Championship, becoming the first amateur to post a top-10 on Tour since Jackson Koivun at the 2025 Procore Championship.

Akina currently holds 10 points on the PGA Tour University Accelerated programme and needs 10 more to join Gordon Sargent, Luke Clanton, and Koivun in securing direct Tour status.

A vibrant crop of sponsor exemptions features reigning 2025 U.S. Amateur champion Mason Howell, 2026 Western Amateur winner Jay Leng making his PGA Tour debut, Grand Canyon standout Nixon Lauritzen, Venezuelan Latin America Amateur runner-up Virgilio Paz, Monroe Invitational champion Rudy Sautron, and 17-year-old American prospect Miles Russell.

Local interest will be anchored by Bermudian pair Nick Jones and Camiko Smith, who secured their berths through the 36-hole domestic qualifier held at Port Royal in September. Jones posted rounds of 73 and 70 to lead the qualifying field on 143, one stroke clear of Smith (74-70).
