West Virginia State blow away Bobcats in five-star display

IslandStats.com
Bermudian international defender Danni Watson and her West Virginia State University team-mates produced a devastating second-half blitz to dismiss West Virginia Wesleyan College 5-1 in the Mountain East Conference.

The Yellow Jackets struck three times inside the opening four minutes of the second period to blow the contest wide open, improving their overall record to 7-3-5 and 7-2-4 in MEC play. The defeat drops the Bobcats to 6-7-2 overall and 6-6-1 in the conference.

WVSU seized early control and broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when Rachel Okoro applied a clinical finish to Leila Karam's well-measured through ball.

Okoro doubled the advantage just past the half-hour mark. After the hosts forced consecutive corner kicks, the forward pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area to fire home unassisted for 2-0.

The Bobcats mounted late first-half pressure, seeing their best opening roll inches wide of the target in the final 30 seconds after María Alejandra Hernández Díaz had earlier been denied at the other end.

However, any hopes of a Wesleyan revival were extinguished in a remarkable burst immediately following the restart.

Karam sparked the scoring flurry in the 47th minute, finishing neatly after being teed up by Okoro. Sixty seconds later, Sara París Fílter found the bottom corner, before Karam grabbed her second of the afternoon just 50 seconds after that from a París Fílter assist to stretch the lead to 5-0.

West Virginia Wesleyan grabbed a consolation with their only clear second-half effort in the 82nd minute, but Watson and the Yellow Jackets backline comfortably saw out the closing stages of a dominant team performance that featured eight shots on target and a commanding 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
