Somerset Trojans 1 Paget Lions 3
A sensational solo strike from Shakir Smith capped off a clinical away performance as Paget Lions earned a deserved 3-1 victory over Somerset Trojans at Somerset Cricket Club.
Smith struck twice—opening the scoring inside ten minutes and sealing the points with a moment of individual brilliance in the second half—to derail a spirited Trojans fightback.
The visitors settled into their rhythm early and found the breakthrough after just eight minutes. Smith reacted sharpest in the final third to slot home and hand Paget an early advantage that they guarded resolutely through to the interval.
Trojans emerged with renewed intent after the restart, but their momentum was abruptly checked six minutes into the second half. Paget were awarded a penalty following an infringement inside the area, and Diaje Hart stepped up to coolly dispatch from the spot to double the visitors' lead.
To their credit, Somerset mounted an immediate response. Four minutes later, the hosts won a dangerous free-kick that was whipped towards goal. The Paget goalkeeper was unable to secure the initial effort, and Keyni Mills pounced on the loose ball to bundle it over the line and cut the deficit to 2-1.
With the home side pushing forward in search of an equaliser, Smith produced the game's defining moment sixteen minutes from time.
Demonstrating supreme physical presence, the forward outmuscled two Somerset defenders on the edge of the area before displaying wonderful composure, deftly lifting the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to restore the two-goal cushion and wrap up all three points.
