Bermuda's grassroots football scene received an emphatic boost over the weekend as 90 youth teams descended on the National Sports Centre for the second annual Athene Youth Kickstart Cup.
The bumper turnout marked a 23 per cent surge in participation compared to the tournament's inaugural staging, underlining the expanding appetite for junior football across the island.
Staged over two days from 10 to 11 October, the pre-season festival brought together boys’ and girls’ squads across the Under-7, Under-9, and Under-11 divisions for a packed schedule of matches ahead of the domestic campaign.
Beyond the pitch, the event adopted a carnival atmosphere. Young players were treated to guest speakers and prize giveaways, alongside traditional cultural performances from majorettes and Gombey troupes. Off the turf, families packed out the grounds to take in local food stalls, interactive photo booths, and an expansive kids' activity zone.
The competition has rapidly established itself as a cornerstone of the island's youth sporting calendar, serving as both competitive preparation and community outreach.
Speaking on the event's wider impact, Natasha Scotland Courcy, Chief Executive and General Counsel of Athene Life Re, highlighted the role of sport in shaping character.
"The Athene Youth Kickstart Cup is one way we are investing in youth development in Bermuda," said Scotland Courcy.
"Sports teach young people the value of hard work and resilience, as well as what they can achieve as part of a team.
"We are proud of how the tournament has grown over its first two years and grateful to the players, families, coaches and supporters who have embraced it."
With junior domestic leagues set to kick off in the coming weeks, the weekend provided an encouraging showcase of depth and enthusiasm for Bermuda's emerging footballing talent.
