Bermudian head coach Jovan Jordan-Whitter oversaw a string of dominant displays as his Hampton University men’s tennis squad delivered strong showings in both singles and doubles at the River City Open in Richmond, Virginia.
The Pirates hit the ground running on the opening day of action, sweeping their doubles matchups in clean fashion.
Rafael Padilha paired with Ibrahim Carrington to defeat Navy's Tommy Spencer and Charlie Buckingham 6-3, while Kohei Konishi and Kevin Jorquera followed suit with a 6-2 triumph against Zach Quattro and Graydon Garcia. Benedict Badza and Aryan Arora rounded off the clean sweep on the doubles courts by downing Navy's Eric Gu and Steve Smith 6-3.
Hampton carried their positive momentum into singles play, with several players digging deep in grueling three-set encounters.
Junior standout Padilha showed remarkable grit in his clash with Navy's Spencer, overturning a first-set tiebreak deficit to seal a thrilling 6-7, 6-3, 10-6 victory.
Jorquera and Carrington produced commanding performances of their own. Jorquera dispatched Quattro 6-1, 6-2 in comprehensive fashion, while Carrington brushed aside Gu 6-3, 6-1.
Badza also claimed a straight-sets win, seeing off Smith 6-2, 6-4 to cap off a successful individual round.
The positive results continued as Arora notched a sharp 6-3, 6-2 victory over the College of Charleston's Matija Ruhotina, while Konishi showcased his staying power in a marathon comeback against William & Mary’s Oliver Cohen, battling back from a set down to edge an 11-9 super-tiebreak decider (3-6, 7-5, 11-9).
The tournament provided a solid benchmark for Jordan-Whitter's side as they fine-tune their form ahead of the upcoming ITA Atlantic Regional Championships.
