Bermuda international Milan Butterfield and his Halesowen Town team-mates saw their Emirates FA Cup run come to an agonising halt on Tuesday night following a 2-1 defeat to Stafford Rangers in their Third Qualifying Round Replay at The Grove.
Just three days after Vanylson Da Costa Silva’s dramatic stoppage-time equaliser rescued a 1-1 draw at the Stan Robinson Stadium to force the tie, the two rivals renewed hostilities under the floodlights in front of a passionate home crowd.
Stafford drew first blood just after the half-hour mark. Having absorbed early Yeltz possession, the visitors capitalised on a sharp transition in the 31st minute to break the deadlock and silence the home terraces.
Butterfield worked tirelessly in the centre of the park to disrupt Stafford’s attacks and drive Halesowen forward, with the hosts ramping up the pressure immediately after the restart.
The Yeltz were rewarded for their persistence in the 64th minute when a well-worked offensive move produced a deserved equaliser, levelling the contest at 1-1 and swinging momentum back in favour of the hosts.
However, despite Halesowen controlling long spells of territory, Stafford Rangers delivered a decisive sucker-punch in the 82nd minute. A clinical finish restored the visitors' lead with only eight minutes of normal time remaining, leaving the home side chasing the game once again.
Halesowen threw bodies forward in a desperate search for another late escape, but Stafford held firm through stoppage time to seal their spot in the next round and leave the Yeltz to reflect on what might have been.
