Bermudian defender Khari Sharrieff helped Howard University secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Mercyhurst at Greene Stadium, marking the first tie in the all-time series between the two programmes.
The Bison made a lively start on home soil and broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when senior midfielder Onarae Rice notched his first collegiate goal.
Rice capped off a fluid attacking move at 17:13, converting clinically following clever build-up play and assists from sophomore midfielders Justin Mims and Marshall Lloyd to hand Howard an early 1-0 advantage.
Mercyhurst responded with sustained pressure after going behind, but Howard goalkeeper Liam Keiller produced several vital stops to preserve the hosts' slender lead.
The Bison nearly doubled their cushion late in the opening half when senior defender Donovan Mose rattled the crossbar with a ferocious strike in the 35th minute.
The visiting Lakers maintained their offensive momentum after the interval, testing Keiller with early attempts as they chased an equaliser.
Howard remained dangerous on the counter, and Rice forced a sharp save from the Mercyhurst goalkeeper in the 48th minute with an effort from distance.
However, Mercyhurst's persistence was rewarded in the 61st minute when they finally unpicked the Bison backline to level the score at 1-1.
Howard pushed to restore their lead as Mims and junior defender Rayce Welborne each registered attempts, but neither could find the target.
With Mercyhurst pressing aggressively for a late winner in the closing stages, Sharrieff and the Howard defensive unit held their ground alongside Keiller to secure a share of the spoils.
