Bermudian international Danni Watson and her West Virginia State University team suffered late heartbreak on Wednesday night, conceding in the final minute to fall 2-1 against Point Park University in Mountain East Conference action.
The result drops the Yellow Jackets to 3-3-4 overall and 3-2-3 in conference play, while the Pioneers improved their standing to 6-3-1 on the season with an impressive 6-1-1 league record.
Chances were at a premium during a cagey opening half-hour, with an early Sara Paris Filter effort and two Point Park corners the only highlights. The contest sparked to life in the 32nd minute when Sharon Freire Omonigho saw her shot blocked, before Watson turned provider just moments later.
In the 34th minute, Watson picked out Maria Alejandra Hernandez Diaz inside the attacking third, with the forward converting smartly to put the visitors 1-0 ahead. Jazz Cedillo forced a stop in the 43rd minute as WVSU pushed for a second, while Madison Fortin fired high just before the interval.
The Yellow Jackets maintained momentum straight after the restart, forcing a 48th-minute stop off a set piece to claim back-to-back corners. Fortin then sent another attempt wide as the visitors pressed to double their advantage, but Point Park weathered the surge and began applying sustained pressure of their own with a sequence of corners and blocked strikes.
The hosts finally breached the WVSU rearguard in the 67th minute to level at 1-1, immediately testing the Yellow Jackets’ keeper again 60 seconds later.
Both sides traded chances in an open final 20 minutes, but it was the Pioneers who delivered the decisive blow, snatching all three points with an unassisted winner in the 90th minute.
