Bermudian defender Michael Madeiros enjoyed a standout weekend at both ends of the pitch, scoring in back-to-back matches to help St. Andrew’s College (SAC) secure a statement upset over nationally ranked US side Northfield Mount Hermon.
Madeiros, serving as vice-captain in his senior year, anchored the Saints' back line while demonstrating his expanding offensive repertoire with a goal in each fixture.
The highlight of the weekend came against Massachusetts-based Northfield Mount Hermon (NMH), who entered the clash ranked seventh in the United States by Sports Illustrated’s High School On SI Prep Soccer rankings. The Canadian side produced a disciplined, high-intensity performance to down their heavily favoured American opponents—a David-versus-Goliath triumph that caught the attention of mainstream media across the border, earning coverage on Toronto rock station Q107.
Madeiros was joined in the squad by fellow Bermudian senior Jah’Zion Taylor and Bermuda resident Heris Ziai, maintaining a prominent island presence in SAC's first team. Ziai made an immediate impact in the weekend's opening match, while Taylor's pace and direct running from wide areas added consistent pressure on the counter-attack.
Primarily celebrated for his calm reading of the game and tactical discipline at centre-back, Madeiros proved equally decisive inside the opposition penalty area, using his aerial prowess from set pieces to register two crucial strikes.
The results provide early momentum for a St. Andrew's side chasing history in 2026. Having captured both the Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) regional title and the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) national crown in each of the past two seasons—a feat dubbed the "Double Double"—SAC are aiming for an unprecedented "three-peat" of both trophies.
