Bermudian prospect Oliver Hayward tested himself against the world’s elite junior triathletes, finishing 53rd at the World Triathlon Championship Finals in Pontevedra, Spain.
Hayward was among a massive global contingent gathered in the Galician city, where four action-packed days of World Championship racing officially got under way on Wednesday afternoon. A bumper field of 4,650 athletes from 62 nations are set to compete across Elite, Elite Para, Under-23, Junior, and Age Group sprint and Olympic-distance disciplines, alongside mixed relay events.
Lining up 64th on a stacked Junior Men's start list featuring the sport's finest rising talents, Hayward was greeted by ideal conditions, with clear blue skies and temperatures hovering in the high 20s.
The Bermudian navigated the frantic opening swim, emerging from the water in 52nd position with a split of 9 minutes, 33 seconds.
Hayward then produced a determined effort across the technical bike leg, posting a time of 28:27 before digging deep on the run course to clock 18:26.
He crossed the finish line in an overall time of 58:17, climbing several places from his bib seeding to claim a commendable 53rd-place finish on the world stage.
