Bermuda faced an uphill battle to preserve their Davis Cup World Group II status after visitors Mexico swept to a 2-0 lead on the opening day at the W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium.
Singles defeats for Daniel Phillips and Trey Mallory handed the advantage to the seeded visitors, leaving Ricky Mallory's side needing a clean sweep across Sunday's rubbers to complete an improbable turnaround.
In the opening rubber, Bermuda number one Phillips—ranked 1,596th in the ATP standings—faced a daunting test against Mexico’s world number 514 Alan Magadán.
Spurred on by a vocal home crowd, Phillips made a confident start by holding serve in the opening game. However, Magadán quickly levelled before stamping his authority on the contest, breaking twice in succession as the Bermudian endured difficulties landing his first delivery to fall behind 5-1.
Phillips mounted a spirited late charge, breaking back and holding to reel off three straight games to close the gap to 5-4. Magadán held his nerve, however, serving out the set to take it 6-4 before running away with the second frame 6-1 to put Mexico in front.
The task then fell to Trey Mallory (ranked 1,827) to pull the hosts level against Alex Hernández, who sits more than 1,300 places above him at 471 in the world.
Mallory matched the Mexican stride for stride throughout a combative opening half-hour. After trading holds, Mallory survived multiple deuces to edge ahead 2-1 and remained resolute on serve to lead 3-2.
The decisive moment of the opening set arrived in the seventh game, where Hernández finally unlocked Mallory's defences with a crucial break before consolidating to lead 5-3. Mallory held to keep the pressure on, but the Mexican closed out the opener 6-4.
Mallory rallied to take an early 1-0 lead in the second set, but Hernández raised his level, dictating from the baseline to claim six of the next seven games and wrap up a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
The tie resumes on Sunday morning with doubles action, where Phillips and Mallory are scheduled to combine against Magadán and Álvarez Valdés in a must-win rubber to keep Bermuda's hopes alive.
