Andrew Armstrong and his No. 20-ranked Marshall Men’s Soccer teammates suffered their first defeat of 2026, falling 2-1 to Utah Valley at Hoops Family Field.
Despite dominating possession and peppering the visitors' goal with 20 attempts, the Thundering Herd were undone by a clinical counter-attack, a resilient defensive display, and an unfortunate deflection straight after the restart.
Marshall looked to seize the initiative from the opening whistle, with Francisco Guimares and Joao Alves both testing the target inside the opening eight minutes. However, Wolverines goalkeeper Kolby Sessions produced two sharp stops in quick succession to keep the hosts at bay.
Utah Valley then delivered a sucker punch just inside the 11th minute. Herd goalkeeper Yurij Obert managed to parry an initial effort from Jose Luis, but the rebound broke kindly to Naime Odeh, who squared for Adem Arous to slot home and hand the visitors a 1-0 advantage against the run of play.
The Herd responded swiftly. In the 24th minute, Carl Romberg picked out Joshua Nugent, who showed composure to slide his finish past Sessions and pull Marshall level at 1-1.
The hosts pressed for a second before the break and thought they had found it in the 30th minute, only for the Utah Valley backline to make a dramatic goal-line clearance to keep the scoreline level heading into the interval.
Disaster struck for Marshall barely 20 seconds into the second half. Utah Valley broke forward and unleashed a shot that took a wicked deflection off a Herd defender and rolled into the net for an own goal, restoring the Wolverines' lead.
Marshall threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser, registering three shots on target in the final 45 minutes. Sessions stood firm, however, producing two vital saves while his defenders executed another desperate goal-line stop to preserve the advantage.
Despite outshooting Utah Valley 20-9 overall and 8-3 in efforts on target, the Herd were left empty-handed on a frustrating night in Huntington.
