'Result I Needed to Grow' – Kempe Reflects on World Championship

IslandStats.com
Bermudian sailor Sebastian Kempe has delivered a candid assessment of his campaign at the 2026 ILCA 7 Men's World Championship, describing the testing week in Dún Laoghaire, Ireland, as a vital learning experience.

Competing against an elite 141-boat international field, Kempe concluded the 12-race regatta 56th overall and ninth in the Silver Fleet with 160 net points.

While the former Youth World Champion showed flashes of world-class pace—most notably carding consecutive third- and second-place finishes during the elimination phase—he admitted falling short of his pre-regatta ambitions.

Taking to social media to reflect on the regatta, the rising Olympian prospect struck a philosophical and determined tone as he prepares to take a brief hiatus from the water.

"Far from my best this week," Kempe stated.

"Not the result I wanted or hoped for — but maybe the result I needed to grow the most. After a busy summer, I'm ready to take a few days away from the boat and reset.

"Thank you to everyone who has made it possible for me to live out my dream of sailing against the best in the world. I hope to come back better and stronger."

The World Championship in Dublin Bay capped an intensive European summer block for Kempe, who has spent the season testing himself against senior Olympic-calibre competition.

Fellow Bermudian Campbell Patton also completed the championship, finishing 18th in the Bronze Fleet and 112th overall. The world title was claimed by Hungary's Jonatán Vadnai, who edged Australia's Olympic champion Matt Wearn and Britain's Michael Beckett.

For Kempe, the regatta marks a key milestone in his transition into senior dinghy racing, providing clear technical benchmarks as he continues his long-term Olympic cycle.
