Nahki Wells and his Luton Town teammates produced a spirited defensive display at Stamford Bridge, but two second-half goals saw Jack Wilshere’s side eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Chelsea.
The Hatters showed great tactical discipline in the first half to frustrate the hosts, soaking up sustained pressure to keep the tie goalless at the interval.
Second-half breakthrough ends Hatters' resistance
Luton's stubborn rearguard was finally breached five minutes after the restart when Danny Welbeck rose highest to head home the opener for Xabi Alonso’s side.
Despite the breakthrough, the Town continued to battle gamely against their top-flight opponents and restricted further clear-cut opportunities for much of the second period.
Late own goal seals progress for Blues
Looking to inject fresh attacking impetus, Wilshere introduced Wells from the substitutes' bench with 12 minutes remaining as Luton searched for an equaliser.
However, Chelsea made sure of their place in the next round just two minutes later. With ten minutes left on the clock, Hakeem Odoffin inadvertently turned the ball into his own net to double the hosts' advantage and seal a 2-0 victory for the Blues.
