Great Lakes Grand Prix Sunday Action Canceled

IslandStats.com
Sunday’s final round of racing at the 2026 XINSURANCE Great Lakes Grand Prix in Michigan City, Indiana, was officially canceled due to dangerously rough conditions on southern Lake Michigan.

Organizers made the decision on safety grounds after severe waters and unworkable swell threatened course safety boats and rescue vessels stationed off Washington Park Beach.

The cancellation brought a premature and frustrating end to an action-packed week of offshore powerboat action.

Organizers stressed that while terminating the event was a difficult decision, the well-being of drivers, support crews, volunteers, and spectators had to take precedence.

"It’s a heartbreaking way to end an incredible week in Michigan City, but the safety of the racers, teams, volunteers, and fans will always come first."

The 17th edition of the Grand Prix—which forms the second round of the Race World Offshore UIM World Championship Series—had drawn a record fleet of 79 offshore boats across 14 competing classes. High-speed Super Cats and Class 1 craft had been scheduled to headline Sunday's afternoon schedule.

Despite Sunday's disruption on the water, the week-long festival succeeded in drawing thousands of spectators to Michigan City's shoreline for community events, including Saturday’s downtown boat parade, block party, and aerial displays.

The Race World Offshore series next moves to Florida for the Clearwater Nationals from September 25th – 27th.
