Phillips Advances as Bermuda begin CAC Games Campaign

Bermuda's athletes made a mixed start to the Central American and Caribbean Games, with Daniel Phillips progressing in the men's singles tennis draw while the island's archers and women's tennis players faced tough opening-day challenges.
Phillips booked his place in the next round with a convincing straight-sets victory over El Salvador's Diego Duran. The Bermudian controlled the match throughout, sealing a 6-4, 6-2 win to advance to the last 16.
There was disappointment, however, for Trey Mallory, whose first-round match ended prematurely through injury. After dropping the opening set 6-3, Mallory responded to take the second 6-3 against Curaçao's Aydan Gomez before retiring while leading 4-2 in the deciding set.
In the women's singles competition, Shelby Madeiros was beaten 6-1, 6-0 by Cuba's Roxana Valdes, while Nadhira Durham suffered an identical 6-1, 6-0 defeat to Curaçao's Sarah Nita.
The pair returned to the court later in the day for the women's doubles, where they were eliminated in the round of 16 after Kiana Graham and Katherine Dibbs claimed a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
Earlier in the day, Camerin Pickering represented Bermuda in the men's individual recurve archery competition, finishing 18th in the ranking round with a score of 621 points.
While Phillips remains in contention in the men's singles, Bermuda's athletes will look to build on the experience gained during the opening day as competition continues across multiple sports.
