Bermuda’s Taylor Carrick suffered an early exit at the $6,000 Men's Lifetime Mississauga Challenger, bowing out in a hard-fought four-game battle against America's Hao Cui.
The PSA Challenger Tour 5 event, hosted at Life Time Mississauga in Canada, saw the young Bermudian bypass the first round with a bye before running into a stubborn, clinical opponent in the round of 16.
Cui eventually secured his passage to the next stage after a grueling 45-minute chess match on the hardwood, stopping Carrick 12-10, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8.
The tone was set during a ferocious, physical opening game. Carrick traded heavy blows from the back of the court and held game-ball opportunities, but Cui showcased immense defensive resilience to snatch the opener 12-10.
Showing the grit that has defined his rise on the professional circuit, Carrick responded brilliantly in the second. The Bermudian stepped up his court position, cutting off Cui's lengths to take a tight second game 11-9 and level the match.
However, the physical exertions of the comeback appeared to take their toll. Cui reasserted his authority in the third, stretching Carrick into the front corners to take it 11-6, before holding off a late Bermudian charge in the fourth to seal the match 11-8.
Despite the defeat, the high-intensity minutes on the Canadian courts provide invaluable experience for Carrick as he continues to test his engine on the professional squash circuit.
