Okera Bascome enjoyed a victorious afternoon in the Warwickshire County Cricket League Premier Division, as Coventry & North Warwickshire CC secured a clinical five-wicket triumph over Walmley CC.
On an afternoon where disciplined fielding and methodical chasing took center stage, Bascome’s sharp glovework helped set the foundation for a dominant team display.
Having won the toss and elected to bowl, Coventry & North Warwickshire immediately vindicated the decision by squeezing the life out of the Walmley batting lineup.
The visitors were eventually bundled out for 175, failing to establish the partnerships needed to post a truly intimidating target. Peter Shackleford offered the most prolonged resistance, grafting his way to a top score of 43 before the lower order collapsed.
The catalyst for the collapse was a lethal spell from bowler T Toor. In a supreme exhibition of control, Toor tore through the order to return standout figures of four wickets for 31 runs off 10.1 overs.
He was single-handedly aided by the sharp reflexes of Bascome, who held onto three crucial catches behind the stumps to keep Walmley firmly on the back foot.
Chasing 176 for victory, Coventry & North Warwickshire paced their reply beautifully to avoid any major late-innings jitters.
The chase was completely anchored by a magnificent, unbeaten knock from A Patel, who stroked his way to a match-winning 79 not out to steer his side toward the win.
There was brief frustration for Bascome, who was unluckily run out for just six runs after a sharp piece of fielding in the ring. Walmley's J Hall did his best to trigger a late collapse, returning a tidy spell of 10.1-0-33-2, but Patel's class shone through.
Coventry & North Warwickshire comfortably crossed the line, reaching 181 for 5 to seal an important Premier Division victory and keep their momentum rolling into next weekend.
