Bermudian rising star Daniel Phillips saw his impressive singles run at the M15 Kayseri tournament in Turkey draw to a close following a straight-sets defeat in the second round.
The 21-year-old, who has turned heads on his spectacular European summer circuit, found the going tough against a highly clinical opponent in America's Keshav Chopra.
Having marched into the round of 16 on the back of a dominant straight-sets victory over local wildcard Birtan Duran, Phillips looked to carry that explosive baseline momentum onto the Turkish hard courts. However, Chopra proved to be a far more stubborn obstacle, matching the Bermudian’s power while forcing critical unforced errors at pivotal moments.
Chopra broke the Bermudian's serve at crucial junctures in both frames, combining deep groundstrokes with sharp net play to dictate the tempo of the match. Despite flashes of the trademark depth and power that saw Phillips excel through a grueling qualifying campaign earlier in the week, he was unable to engineer a breakback, ultimately falling to a mirror-image 6-3, 6-3 defeat.
While it is a frustrating second-round exit for the young Bermudian, his deeply competitive showing in the main draw caps off another highly productive and developmental week on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour. Phillips will now look to regroup and take the valuable overseas exposure into his upcoming fixtures on the European hard-court circuit.
