Bermudian tennis prospect Daniel Phillips has secured his place in the main draw of the M15 Kayseri tournament in Turkey after coming through a grueling three-set battle against Vladimir Osminkin.
The 21-year-old showed immense resilience on the Turkish hard courts, holding his nerve during a high-stakes match tie-break to wrap up a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 victory.
Phillips, who comfortably won his opening qualifying match in straight sets, found himself pushed to the absolute limit in a fluctuating second-round contest.
The Bermudian started the match with aggressive intent, breaking Osminkin’s serve to take a clinical 6-3 opening set. However, Osminkin fought back well in the second, dictating play from the baseline to level the match with a 6-3 scoreline of his own.
With a place in the main tournament draw on the line, the match moved into a tense 10-point tie-break decider.
Phillips stepped up his intensity when it mattered most, finding his first serves and forcing errors from his opponent to secure a commanding 10-5 victory in the shootout.
The victory guarantees Phillips a spot in the main draw as he continues his highly productive European summer circuit on the ITF World Tennis Tour.
