Bermuda suffered another setback at the Billie Jean King Cup Americas Group III tournament, falling to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Jamaica in Santa Tecla, El Salvador.
Despite an exceptional opening singles performance from player-captain Shelby Madeiros, the Central American side fought back to level the tie before clinically snatching the deciding doubles rubber.
Bermuda could not have asked for a better start to their second round-robin tie of the week, courtesy of a dominant display by player-captain Shelby Madeiros.
Following a bruising team defeat to Panama in their opener, Madeiros led by example on the El Salvador courts. She dismantled Jamaica's Katherine Dibbs in straight sets, executing a near-flawless strategy from the baseline to cruise to a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victory and hand Bermuda the early lead.
The advantage was short-lived, however, as Jamaica issued a fierce response in the second singles rubber.
Nadhira Durham found herself up against an unstoppable Kinaa Graham, who took complete control of the match from the first serve. Graham power-played her way through the contest, capitalizing on the clay surface to hand Durham a heavy 6-0, 6-0 defeat and level the tie at 1-1.
With the outcome hanging in the balance, the tie moved to a high-stakes deciding doubles match.
Madeiros teamed up with Alexcie Burrows to take on the Jamaican pairing of Dibbs and Graham. While the Bermudian duo showed tremendous grit to fight back in a competitive second set, the Jamaican pair's tactical sharpness ultimately proved decisive.
Dibbs and Graham secured a hard-fought 6-0, 6-3 victory to complete the turnaround for Jamaica, leaving Bermuda to regroup ahead of their remaining group fixtures.
