Bermudian middle-distance star Dage Minors was denied a dramatic victory by the barest of margins, finishing a phenomenal second in an agonizingly close 1500m final at the Tonypandy Track Classic in Wales.
Competing against a top-tier field of British metric-mile specialists at the King George VI Athletics Track in Pontypridd, the 30-year-old international turned the marquee event into a breathless tactical battle that was ultimately decided by a photo finish.
The race was run at a ferocious pace from the gun, with the field bunching tight as they rounded the final bend. Minors, utilizing his extensive international experience, executed a perfectly timed kick over the final 200 metres to pull himself into contention for the crown.
Locked in a furious, stride-for-stride sprint down the home straight against Great Britain's Henry Evans, both athletes lunged desperately for the tape in a grandstand finish.
The stadium clock confirmed just how microscopic the gap was. Evans secured the gold by a mere five-hundredths of a second, stopping the clock in 3:51.21, with a lunging Minors millimetres behind to capture second place in a superb 3:51.26.
The battle for the final spot on the podium was equally fierce, with local favourite Craig Williams gritting out a third-place finish just behind the leading duo in 3:51.63.
Despite the heartbreak of missing out on the top spot by a fraction of a second, the performance represents another highly decorated outing for Minors on his European summer circuit.
Faced with a quick transition into a heavy block of international fixtures, showing this level of tactical sharpness and raw finishing speed on the Welsh track bodes exceptionally well for his upcoming competitive schedule.
