Bermudian tennis prospect Daniel Phillips continued his impressive run of form on the clay courts of Turkey, securing a commanding straight-sets victory to advance to the quarter-finals of the M15 Kayseri Tour.
Stepping onto the court for his second-round clash in the Singles Main Draw, the rising teenager put on a mature display of baseline composure to dismantle Algeria’s Mohamed Ali Abibsi.
Phillips entered the match looking to impose his aggressive style early on, but he was met with stubborn resistance from Abibsi in a tightly contested opening frame.
Trading heavy groundstrokes from the back of the court, both players looked vulnerable on serve in the dusty conditions. However, it was the clinical break-point conversion from the Bermudian that eventually tipped the scales. Phillips broke Abibsi at a crucial juncture late in the set to claim the opening frame 6-4.
With the psychological momentum firmly in his favor, Phillips tightened his grip on the contest in the second set.
Improving his first-serve percentage and cutting down on unforced errors, the young prospect limited Abibsi’s opportunities to mount a structural counter-attack.
Phillips broke the Algerian's serve twice more in the second frame, executing his game plan with precision to run out a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 victor. The win secures his place in the final eight, where he will face a significantly higher-ranked opponent as he continues his quest for a maiden professional title on the ITF World Tennis Tour.
