The Deloitte Open tennis tournament roared into life at the Pomander Gate Tennis Club with a packed schedule of high-octane matches setting the tone across multiple divisions.
Local favorites and rising stars took to the clay courts in a bid to secure safe passage through their respective draws, producing a day of dominant straight-set victories and a thrilling three-set marathon.
Scott Redmond enjoyed a flawless start to his tournament campaign, picking up convincing victories in both the singles and doubles draws to march into the next round.
In the Men’s A singles round of thirty-two, Redmond turned on the style to completely neutralize Nicholas O Cooper, executing a ruthless performance to seal a comprehensive victory.
He later returned to the court alongside Tariq Simons in the Men's A doubles quarter-finals. The duo showed excellent chemistry at the net, brushing aside the challenge of Ryan Kronenberg and Chase Mccrimmon to win out.
Despite the doubles defeat, Mccrimmon had earlier tasted success in the singles draw, though he had to work exceptionally hard for it. Facing Tristan Pettit in a grueling round of thirty-two clash, Mccrimmon showed superb composure during two high-stakes tie-breaks to edge past his opponent.
Numair Khan also secured his spot in the next round of the A singles with a clinical performance against Kronenberg, while Jeffrey Allen Bunge was equally impressive in the B division, dropping just one game on his way to defeating Alex Yung.
It was a day of contrasting results for the Mcbrearty household, with Chloe Mcbrearty stealing the headlines in the Women’s A division.
Mcbrearty put on a masterclass in baseline precision during her round of sixteen match against Kate Pursell, flying through the contest without dropping a single game to secure a shutout victory.
However, there was no such luck for Richard Mcbrearty in the Men's B singles, as he fell to a straight-sets defeat against a resilient Nicholas Butterfield.
Elsewhere in the women's draw, Lee Terceira booked her place in the next round after coming through a tight encounter against Alexcie Cherrie Burrows.
In the veteran classifications, Josephine Wilson and Shonette Wilson set the standard in the over-forty-fives doubles with a comfortable victory over Sameera Hasan and Nanette Kiernan.
The match of the day came in the over-forty-fives men's singles quarter-finals, where Johann Hunter staged a magnificent comeback to defeat Chris Grasso. After dropping the opening set, Hunter rallied to level the match before showing nerves of steel to edge a dramatic match tie-break ten points to six.
