Bermudian tennis prospect Daniel Phillips and his doubles partner Bogdan Seleznev suffered a heartbreaking quarter-final exit at the M15 Kayseri tournament in Turkey.
The duo fell just short of a place in the semi-finals after being edged out in a tense three-set battle by the American pairing of Jeffrey Fradkin and Maxwell McKennon.
Despite an impressive start from the Bermudian-Russian tandem, it was the Americans who showed greater nerve in the closing stages, ultimately prevailing 6-7, 6-4, 10-4.
Phillips and Seleznev looked sharp from the opening serve on the Turkish hard courts, matching their opponents' intensity in a tightly contested opening frame.
There was little to separate the two sides as they traded breaks, sending the first set into a high-stakes tie-breaker. Phillips showed great composure at the net, delivering critical volleys to help his side clinch the tie-break 7-6 and claim the early momentum.
However, Fradkin and McKennon responded strongly in the second set. The American duo raised their first-serve percentage and cut down on unforced errors, breaking the Phillips-Seleznev serve late in the set to close it out 6-4 and send the match into a deciding match tie-break.
With a semi-final berth on the line, the Americans quickly seized the initiative in the race to ten points. Fradkin and McKennon raced to an early lead in the tie-break, putting intense pressure on Phillips and Seleznev.
The Bermudian fought valiantly from the baseline, but the American pair proved too clinical, sealing the decider 10-4 to progress to the next round and bring a frustrating end to Phillips' doubles campaign.
