Alarm Bells Ring for Bermudian Cricket

IslandStats.com
A bruising weekend of local cricket saw the ball completely dominate the bat, raising serious concerns for the National team's preparations ahead of upcoming international competition.

With the domestic T20 season bizarrely drawing to a close after just three weeks, the lack of runs from the island’s top batsmen leaves both players and fans facing a worrying lack of match sharpness before taking to the world stage.

Across all the matches covered by Island Stats, teams consistently crumbled at the crease, with only three batsmen managing to cross the half-century mark over the entire weekend. The low scoring was highlighted by the fact that only a single club managed to aggregate more than 200 runs across their two fixtures, painting a grim picture of the current state of batting form on the island.

St. George’s Cricket Club were the most prolific side in terms of raw runs, accumulating 227 across their two matches, but their aggressive approach came at a hefty price as they surrendered 16 wickets in the process. In contrast, a more disciplined Southampton Rangers side totaled 183 runs to win both of their matches, showing superior game management by losing 12 wickets. Somerset Cricket Club enjoyed a reasonably stable weekend with the bat, grinding out 153 runs for the loss of just nine wickets, while PHC suffered a miserable time at the crease, collapsing to a combined total of 98 runs across two innings while losing 17 wickets.

The individual batting highlights were fleeting, with Terryn Fray of Bailey’s Bay leading the weekend's short list of top scorers with a resilient 55. Former Sussex all-rounder Delray Rawlins showed glimpses of his class with 52 for Southampton Rangers, and Keegan Jones contributed a vital 50 for St. George’s Cricket Club, but these isolated performances did little to mask the wider systemic struggles across the league.

Instead, the weekend belonged entirely to the bowlers, who produced some remarkably destructive spells. Kwasi James was the star of the show for Somerset Cricket Club, ripping through the opposition to claim astonishing figures of five wickets for just seven runs from his three point four overs.

Southampton Rangers bowler Nyhrobi Carmichael was equally lethal in a devastatingly short cameo, taking four wickets for a mere three runs in just ten deliveries, while Jermal Proctor of Cleveland County also tore through the batting order to finish with four wickets for four runs from his three overs.

While these exceptional bowling performances deserve high praise, the inability of local batsmen to build substantial innings just one week before the final round of the T20 tournament will undoubtedly give the national selectors plenty of sleepless nights.
