The trophy cabinet at Montverde Academy will require yet more reinforcement this week after their Girls’ Track and Field team secured a historic fifth consecutive FHSAA Class 2A Region 2 Championship.
In a dominant display in Wildwood, Florida, the Montverde Girls dismantled a field of 28 teams to retain their crown, while the boys’ squad—led by a clinical Zydon Furbert—clinched an impressive third-place overall finish.
Amaris Munya was the catalyst for the girls’ success, delivering a masterclass in middle-distance running and relay execution. Munya first secured a podium spot in the individual 800m, crossing the line in 2:22.79 to take third. However, it was in the team events where she truly asserted her dominance.
Munya ran a decisive third leg for the gold-medal winning 4x800m relay team, who stopped the clock at 9:52.35. She then returned to "anchor" the 4x400m relay squad, producing a blistering final lap to secure another gold in 3:49.39, cementing Montverde’s status as the elite force in Floridian high school athletics.
On the Boys’ side, Zydon Furbert continued his meteoric rise with a powerhouse performance in the sprints. Furbert claimed the regional title in the 400m Dash, clocking a superb 48.20 to leave the field in his wake. He later showcased his range by finishing fifth in a lightning-fast 200m final, stopping the clock at 22.17.
The combined efforts of Munya and Furbert propelled Montverde to a podium finish in the team standings, marking one of the most successful regional outings in the school’s history. With the state championships looming, the Bermudian contingent appears to be hitting peak form at precisely the right moment.
