The ERAU Track Complex in Daytona Beach provided a high-octane setting as Clayton State University’s Sancho Smith tested himself against the region's elite at the 2026 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Competing in the Men’s 800m, the Bermudian standout delivered a measured and tactical performance in a fiercely contested final. Smith crossed the line in fifth place, stopping the clock at 1:52.11.
The time marks a significant season milestone for the former Saltus Grammar School student, who has consistently lowered his marks across the spring circuit. In a race defined by a blistering opening lap, Smith maintained his composure in the pack, surging over the final 200 metres to secure his top-five standing and vital points for the Laker men’s team.
Smith’s consistency in the mid-distance events continues to be a cornerstone for the Clayton State programme. Having already established himself as a school record-holder in the indoor 600m earlier this year, his transition to the outdoor 800m has seen him cement his reputation as one of the most reliable finishers in the conference.
With the PBC Championships serving as a primary target for the Lakers this season, Smith’s performance in Florida further validates the rigorous training cycle he has undergone since moving into the U.S. collegiate ranks. The focus now shifts toward potential regional qualification as the outdoor season enters its decisive final phase.
