Saltus Claim Primary Glory as Furbert Shatters Record

IslandStats.com
The Flora Duffy South Field Stadium at the National Sports Centre provided the backdrop for a historic day of youth athletics as Saltus Grammar School were crowned the Bermuda School Sports Federation’s Primary School Track and Field Champions.

In a display of consistency and depth, Saltus Grammar School secured the overall title with a combined score of 275 points, successfully fending off a resilient Warwick Academy who finished as runners-up with 245 points. West Pembroke Primary completed the top three after amassing 172 points during a high-octane meet.

While Saltus Grammar School celebrated team success, the individual story of the day belonged to Skye Furbert of West Pembroke Primary. Furbert delivered a performance for the ages in the Under 9 Girls 100 metres, stopping the clock at a blistering 13.93 seconds. The time was enough to shatter the previous record of 14.35 seconds, which had stood for twenty-six years since being set by Kiara Baxter in 2000.

Furbert’s record-breaking run was merely the highlight of a dominant triple-gold campaign, as she also claimed victory in the 200 and 400 metres before anchoring her relay team to a record-breaking finish. Her exploits were officially recognised at the conclusion of the meet when she was named the recipient of the 2026 Toby Colombe Award for the Best Performer, having secured a maximum individual points tally.

The divisional standings highlighted a wealth of emerging talent across the island’s primary school system. In the Male Under 10 category, Nico Simmons of Warwick Academy mirrored Furbert’s dominance by securing a perfect 30 points, while Theodore Smith of Harrington Sound Primary and Nolan Horrobin of Saltus Grammar School followed closely in the rankings. The Over 10 divisions saw similar excellence, with Gabrielle Saunders of Somersfield Academy and Shammaah Darko of Warwick Academy both finishing their events with maximum points to lead their respective fields.

Further success was spread across the competing schools, with Diamond Morris of Saltus Grammar School taking the Female Under 10 title and Elliott Davidge securing top honours for the champions in the Male Under 9 bracket. As the curtain falls on the 2026 Primary School Championships, the event will be remembered as a landmark day for West Pembroke Primary’s Furbert and a testament to the enduring sporting legacy of Saltus Grammar School.
