Sophomore Tajer Basden produced a gritty display of speed and technical skill, representing Johnson C. Smith University at the 2026 Golden Bulls Invitational.
Competing on his home track at the Irwin Belk Complex, Basden faced a demanding schedule that tested both his raw sprinting power and his rhythmic discipline over the hurdles. In a densely packed field for the Men’s 200m dash, Basden powered through the turn to clock a time of 23.24. The performance earned him a 20th-place finish overall, serving as a solid benchmark as he continues to sharpen his speed for the outdoor season.
However, it was in the Men’s 400m Hurdles where Basden made his most significant mark of the meet. Navigating the ten barriers with a determined stride, he stopped the clock in 57.48. The time was good enough for seventh place, securing a vital top-ten finish for the Golden Bulls and demonstrating his growing comfort in one of track and field’s most grueling events.
The invitational is a key fixture for the Charlotte-based program, allowing the squad to gauge their progress against regional rivals before the championship season begins. For Basden—who has also been a consistent contributor to the school’s cross-country and middle-distance efforts—the results highlight a versatile range that makes him a valuable asset to the JCSU roster.
The Golden Bulls will now turn their attention to their next away fixture, with Basden expected to play a key role in both individual events and relay duties as the team builds momentum toward the CIAA Outdoor Championships.
