No. 62 Memphis proved too clinical for Tulane Men’s Tennis, securing a hard-fought 4-1 victory at the Goldring Tennis Center despite a spirited showing from the Green Wave’s top seeds.
The encounter began with a high-stakes battle for the doubles point, where Bermuda’s Daniel Phillips and partner Lance Nisbet looked poised to cause an upset. Competing in the number one slot, the Tulane duo had clawed their way into a 4-3 lead over Moritz Kudernatsch and Maxime Dubouch. However, the match was left unfinished as Memphis secured victories on the remaining courts to snatch the opening point and the early momentum.
The focus then shifted to a heavyweight singles clash at the top of the lineup, as Phillips faced a rematch with Kudernatsch. The opening set was a grueling affair, with both players trading heavy baseline blows before the Memphis standout managed to break late and claim a 7-5 advantage.
Despite Phillips’ efforts to regroup, Kudernatsch maintained his intensity in the second set, finding the lines with increasing frequency to close out a 7-5, 6-2 victory. The defeat at the summit of the order left Tulane with a mountain to climb, and while they managed to get on the board, the depth of the nationally ranked Tigers eventually proved decisive.
For Phillips, the week has been one of significant individual milestones, including his recent Player of the Week honors and a victory over a top-50 opponent. While the team result in New Orleans didn't go their way, the Bermudian international continues to demonstrate that he can go toe-to-toe with the elite of the American collegiate circuit.
