Bermuda’s rising tennis talents enjoyed a landmark day at the ITF World Junior Tennis campaign in Santa Tecla, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams securing vital victories.
After a testing opening to the tournament, the young Bermuda teams produced a resilient collective performance to get their qualifying bids back on track. The girls’ squad led the charge in Group B with a dominant 3-0 sweep of Aruba, a result that underscores the significant potential within the island's under-14 ranks.
Arianna Parra set the tone for the afternoon in the opening singles rubber, delivering a composed baseline performance to defeat Sophie Lynn Koolman 6-4, 6-2. The momentum was carried forward by Chloe McBrearty, who was in clinical form throughout her match against Eva Angelina Benschop. McBrearty’s 6-2, 6-0 victory effectively settled the tie, allowing the Bermudian pair to enter the doubles with a two-point cushion. The duo completed the perfect afternoon when Benschop and Koolman were forced to retire with the score at 6-1 in the first set.
The boys’ team found their route to victory in Group C slightly more arduous but no less impressive, ultimately defeating Suriname 2-1. The tie began with a setback as Riley Maybury fell 6-0, 6-3 to a powerful display from Alexi Currie. However, Trystan Thompson dragged his team back into contention with a gritty performance in the top singles spot. Thompson demonstrated remarkable mental fortitude to overcome Mitchel Hathie in a tense straight-sets encounter, eventually prevailing 6-4, 7-6 via a decisive 7-3 tiebreak.
With the scores level, the deciding doubles match required a clinical edge, and the pairing of Manuel Maldonado and Trystan Thompson delivered. The Bermudian duo showcased superior coordination and net play to see off the challenge of Currie and Hathie with a 6-3, 6-2 win. The double success provides a timely boost for the entire Bermudian delegation as they prepare for the final stages of the regional pre-qualifying event.
