Kempe Secures Top-Ten Finishes in Mallorca Regatta

IslandStats.com
Newly crowned Bermuda Athlete of the Year and Islandstats.com Male Athlete of the Year Sebastian Kempe has made a strong start to his European campaign, showcasing his elite potential on the opening day of the Mallorca Sailing Center Regatta.

Competing in a world-class ILCA 7 fleet in the Bay of Palma, Kempe navigated a grueling four-race schedule to sit in 21st place overall. In a massive field that serves as the traditional prelude to the Trofeo Princesa Sofia, the 20-year-old Bermudian proved he can mix it with the world's best, recording two impressive top-ten finishes during the first day of action.

The regatta, which has attracted more than 300 Olympic-class boats across five disciplines, began in tactical conditions that rewarded consistency and patience. Kempe found his rhythm early, crossing the line in 8th place in the opening race of the series.

While the middle of the day proved more challenging, Kempe finished the afternoon on a high note. In the fourth and final race of the day, he delivered a clinical display of downwind speed to secure a superb 6th-place finish. Those results leave him with 55 net points, firmly within striking distance of the top 15 as the competition intensifies.

Kempe’s performance in Mallorca comes just weeks after he was honored at the Hamilton Princess as Bermuda’s premier male athlete for his achievements in 2025. Having spent the winter hosting an elite training camp on home waters, the former Youth World Champion is clearly reaping the rewards of his intensive pre-season preparations.

The Italian sailor Dimitri Peroni currently leads the 67-boat ILCA 7 fleet, but Kempe’s ability to secure front-of-the-pack finishes in half of today’s races signals his intent for the week ahead. With the regatta running until Sunday, the focus for the Bermudian will be on maintaining this consistency as he builds toward the summer's major championships.
