The Gnosis National Squash Championships have officially sparked into life at the Bermuda Squash Club in Devonshire, as the island’s second-largest racquet sport takes center stage for its premier domestic event. The opening night of competition was defined by a series of grueling marathons and clinical displays, setting a high standard for the week of championship squash ahead.
Two encounters on the opening draw pushed the athletes to their physical limits, both requiring a full five sets to determine a victor. In the Men’s C Division, Colin Alexander produced a resilient comeback to edge past Andrew Marsh in a see-saw battle. After dropping the opening set, Alexander fought back to secure a 5–11, 11–6, 12–10, 7–11, 11–8 victory, finally breaking Marsh’s resistance in a tense deciding frame.
The drama was mirrored in the Men’s Veterans Over 40 Division, where Hadleigh Farrer and Ricardo Smith engaged in the most protracted duel of the evening. Farrer eventually secured a 3–2 victory, but only after a marathon final set that pushed well beyond the standard eleven points. His 11–7, 7–11, 9–11, 11–6, 14–12 triumph was a masterclass in veteran endurance and remains the early candidate for the match of the tournament.
While the men’s draws provided the drama, the Women’s Open division saw a far more clinical performance from Abigail Brewer. Facing Mckenna Kyme, Brewer asserted her authority from the first serve, utilizing superior court coverage and tight line-hitting to dominate the encounter. She required little over twenty minutes to secure a straight-sets victory, stopping the clock with a comprehensive 11–4, 11–3, 11–5 scoreline.
As the championships move into the second round, the focus shifts to the seeded players in the Men's and Women's Open draws, with the Bermuda Squash Club expecting capacity crowds for the business end of the tournament later this week.
