The 2025 Bermuda Keelboat Nationals in the International One Design (IOD) Class commenced with a thrilling four-race schedule in the Great Sound, with Peter Bromby establishing an early command of the fleet.
Veteran sailor Olympian Peter Bromby, at the helm of Falcon, put on a masterclass of consistency and speed to top the leaderboard after Day One. Bromby leads the fleet comfortably with a total of 5 points.
His near-perfect day saw him secure victory in the first three races, demonstrating superior control and strategy in the challenging Great Sound conditions. He only relinquished his winning streak in the final race of the day, where he finished second, ensuring a commanding lead heading into the next day of competition.
Behind Bromby, the competition for second place is fiercely contested, with two boats tied on 14 points apiece.
Blythe Walker, sailing Peppercorn, currently occupies second place on countback. Walker struggled to find his form early on, finishing the first two races in fourth place and then dropping to fifth in the third race. However, he rebounded spectacularly in the final race of the day, securing a crucial victory that propelled him up the standings.
Sharing the 14-point tally is Adam Barboza sailing Bounty, who sits in third place. Barboza showed consistency across the middle of the fleet, posting two third-place finishes and a second place, though a sixth-place finish in one race means he trails Walker on the tie-breaker rule after the opening four races.
The stage is set for a gripping remainder of the championships, with the battle for the podium wide open behind the high-flying Bromby.
