Bermuda Kicks Off Island Games with Strong Start in Orkney

Day One of competition at the 2025 Island Games in Orkney has seen a promising start for Bermuda, with athletes and teams delivering notable performances across multiple sports.

Football

Bermuda's football teams enjoyed a successful opening day. The Men’s Under-23 team began their tournament campaign with a solid 2-0 victory over the Western Isles, thanks to goals from Joshua Joseph and Keyni Mills.

Not to be outdone, the Bermuda Women's National team staged an impressive comeback, rallying from a goal down to defeat Jersey 3-1. After a scoreless first half, Jaden Masters, Khyla Brangman, and Jya Ratteray-Smith found the back of the net to secure the win.

Triathlon

In the Women's Triathlon, Megan Berry showcased her endurance, finishing 18th with a total time of 2:47:51 (26:42 swim, 1:28:22 bike, 50:51 run).

Lawn Bowls

Bermuda's bowlers started well. David Leach had a perfect start in the Men's Individual matches, claiming two convincing wins against Ian Barnes from Falkland Islands (2-0) and Stephen Williams from Guernsey (2-1).

In the Women's Pairs, Judith Barton and Tamara Leach secured a tight 11-9 victory over Sharon Barnes and Kristiane Thorsen of the Falkland Islands, though they later fell to Guernsey.

Barton faced tough competition in the Women's Singles, going down in both her matches.

Track & Field

On the track, Jake Brislane impressed in the Men's 1,500m, qualifying for the final after finishing second in Heat 1 with the second fastest qualifying time of 3:58.65. Gayle Lindsay also put in a strong effort in the Women's 10,000m race, securing a credible 5th place with a time of 38:28.29.

Badminton

In the Team Event, Bermuda went down 5 - 0 to Orkney in their opening match, in the Men's Singles Andrew Reid defeated Aaron Simmons 21 - 8, 21 - 18, in the Ladies Singles Jody Groundwater defeated Emma Moran-Lee 21 - 8, 21 - 4. In the Men's Doubles, Gary Nicolson and Sam Rendall defeated Daljeet Singh Gadiwale, and Aaron Simmons 21 - 14, 21 - 13, and then in the Ladies' Doubles Gemma Foulis, and Shannon Leslie defeated See Ju Chua, and Dezirae Darrell 21 - 4, 21 - 10, and in the final Mixed Doubles match Matthew Reid, and Rebecca Reid defeated Daljeet Singh Gadiwale, and See Ju Chua 21 - 9, 21 - 12.

In the second team match Bermuda went down 5 - 0 to the Isle of Man. In the Men's Singles, Alexander Buck defeated Daljeet Singh Gadiwale 21 - 15, 21 - 12, the Ladies' Singles saw Charlotte Watson defeat Somers Stevenson 21 - 10, 21 - 3, while in the Men's Doubles Tommy Cheng, and Baillie Watterson defeated Danial Hughes, and Aaron Simmons 21- 14, 21 - 18. In the Ladies' Doubles, Philippa Li, and Annelise Mellor defeated Dezirae Darrell, and Jin Sun 21 - 13, 21 - 2, and then in the Mixed Doubles Baillie Watterson, and Philippa Li defeated Danial Hughes, and Jin Sun 21 - 15, 21 - 8.

Squash

Taylor Carrick competed in the Men's Singles, he would open with a 3 - 0 win over Andrew Moar from Orkney 11-4, 11-6, 11-3. Brian Darling went down 3 - 0 to Stephen Leask from Shetland Islands 11-8, 11-2, 11-6. Neil Pohlman went down 3 - 1 to Ramsay Hogg from Shetland Islands 11-5, 11-6, 4-11, 11-3.

Overall, it was a busy and encouraging start for Bermuda at the 2025 Island Games, with promising results across various disciplines.
