As previously reported, Bermudian youngster Jaaziah Van Lowe has capped off an impressive season at the Steven Gerrard Academy (SGA) by receiving the Under-21 Most Improved Player Award.
The talented teenager, who made the move to Liverpool at the age of 16 to join the prestigious academy, has reflected on a year of significant growth and unexpected positional changes.
Van Lowe initially joined SGA as a goalkeeper but faced an early setback when he broke his finger within his first month. This injury led to an unforeseen switch to playing outfield, a move that has ultimately shaped his development.
"I entered SGA as a goalkeeper but broke my finger within my first month so I started playing on pitch," Van Lowe explained. "I've played all over the pitch but just before my Barcelona trip, I realised that I wanted to play center back."
Despite his limited experience in the position, Van Lowe excelled when thrown into the deep end at the MIC Cup in Barcelona. "I was low key nervous going into the MIC Cup playing center back as I felt I didn't have enough experience to compete at such a level," he admitted. However, he went on to play every minute of their games, even scoring the team's first goal of the tournament and earning the Players' Player of the Tournament award.
His impressive performances continued back in Bermuda. On Bermuda Day, Van Lowe featured in a showcase game, even providing an assist. Following this, at the academy's Awards Ceremony, he was recognised for his significant progress, receiving the Under-21 Most Improved Player award. "I was excited," he said.
Reflecting on his journey, Van Lowe shared an inspiring message: "I say all that to say, no matter what you're going through... Keep pushing. Step outside your comfort zone as you may find your place and purpose. The journey is far from over. I strive daily to be better than I was yesterday. I make many mistakes but try and learn the lesson in the act."
He also touched on his evolving role on the pitch. "Everyone knows me as being a goalkeeper. I enjoy playing in goal but playing on pitch excites me. It pushes me to be better and I think my experience in goal has helped me along my journey playing cb. I'm not where I want to be but I'm enjoying the journey and trusting the process."
Van Lowe expressed his gratitude to his support network, naming numerous individuals, and giving a special mention to his mother for her unwavering belief.
Looking ahead, Van Lowe is keen to give back to the next generation, announcing his involvement in the Little Einstein Camps this summer for children aged 3 to 11, where he will be sharing his knowledge and experience.
Jaaziah Van Lowe's story is a testament to adaptability, perseverance, and embracing new challenges, and his recognition as the Under-21 Most Improved Player at the Steven Gerrard Academy is a well-deserved achievement.
