Bermuda 105/8 Canada 108/5
In a highly anticipated clash between two sides expected to contend at the 2025 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Canada, it was Canada who emerged victorious, defeating Bermuda by 5 wickets with 11 balls to spare on the opening day of the North America Cup tournament in the Cayman Islands.
Bermuda, having won the toss, elected to bat first. However, despite a solid platform, they struggled to accelerate in the final overs, ultimately posting a total of 105 for 8. At one stage, Bermuda looked well-placed at 88 for 3 with four overs remaining. Yet, the final 24 deliveries yielded just 17 runs and saw a flurry of five wickets fall, including a dramatic three wickets in the 19th over.
Captain Terryn Fray anchored the Bermuda innings with a patient half-century, scoring 52 off 54 balls, including four boundaries. Delray Rawlins was the only other batsman to reach double figures, contributing 34 off 37 balls, hitting two sixes. In total, Bermuda managed just seven boundaries in their innings.
Canada's bowling attack proved effective in stifling the Bermudian batsmen. Kaleem Sana was the pick of the bowlers, claiming an impressive four wickets for just 17 runs in his four overs. Jaskaran Buttar delivered a game-changing 19th over, taking three wickets and finishing with excellent figures of 4-0-11-3.
Chasing a modest target of 106, Canada reached their goal in 18.1 overs, scoring 108 for 5. Harsh Thaker top-scored for Canada with a composed 36 off 34 balls. While Bermuda's bowlers managed to pick up wickets at regular intervals, they couldn't prevent Canada from reaching the target. Five different Bermuda bowlers each claimed a wicket, with Jermal Proctor proving the most economical, conceding just 11 runs in his three overs for his solitary scalp.
This opening match provides an early indication of the competitive nature of the North America Cup, with both Bermuda and Canada showcasing glimpses of their potential ahead of the T20 World Cup next year. Canada will be pleased to have secured the victory, while Bermuda will look to learn from their innings and bounce back in their subsequent matches.
