The 54th Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by FERGUS Hotels regatta continued, presenting sailors with a crucial opportunity to regain form and confidence following the Paris 2024 Olympics. However, the 15-18 knot North Easterly offshore winds proved challenging, and the day's racing saw mixed fortunes for Bermudians Sebastian Kempe and Adriana Penruddocke.
Kempe in ILCA 7 Fleet
Sebastian Kempe competed in the highly competitive 174-boat ILCA 7 fleet. After two more races, bringing the series total to eight, Kempe's overall position saw some fluctuation. He improved slightly from 50th place to 48th place, accumulating 191 net points.
In the first race of the day, the seventh of the series, Kempe finished 35th. He then finished 42nd in the second race.
While Kempe managed a slight improvement in overall standing, the challenging conditions continued to test his consistency in the fleet.
The ILCA 7 class leaderboard saw some movement at the top. Brit Micky Beckett saw his lead narrowed by his compatriot Elliot Hanson, who performed strongly on the day. Beckett remains in a strong position to secure his fourth consecutive Palma win, holding an 11-point lead over Hanson.
Penruddocke's Struggle Continues in ILCA 6 Fleet
Adriana Penruddocke faced ongoing difficulties in the 113-boat ILCA 6 fleet. She ended the day with 212 net points and experienced a further drop in the overall standings, moving from 47th to 51st place.
Penruddocke crossed the line in 52nd place in the first race of the day, which was the seventh race of the regatta. She then finished 45th in the second race.
The ILCA 6 fleet is currently led by Hungary's Maria Erdi, the 2023 ILCA 6 World Champion, who won the first race of the day and now leads with 40 net points.
The Troféo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by FERGUS Hotels remains a key event for sailors seeking to establish themselves on the Olympic circuit. The fluctuating conditions and strong competition are providing a demanding test for all participants.
