An evening of contrasting fortunes saw Bermudian footballers making their mark on both sides of the Atlantic, with players/coaches featuring in crucial matches in the UK and the US.
Razhir Smith-Jones, Coleridge Fubler, Riley Robinson, & Malachi Henry
In the UK, a quartet of Bermudian talents – Razhir Smith-Jones, Coleridge Fubler, Riley Robinson, and Malachi Henry – took to the hallowed turf of an iconic stadium as their Binfield side faced Ashford Town (Middlesex) FC on Non-League Weekend. The match, a significant fixture for both clubs, saw a closely contested encounter.
Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the Binfield team, featuring the four Bermudians, were unable to secure a positive result. Ashford Town (Middlesex) FC scored the solitary goal of the game in the first half, leaving Binfield to rue missed opportunities as they ultimately succumbed to a 1-0 defeat. The experience of playing in such a high-stakes match will undoubtedly provide valuable lessons for the young Bermudian players.
David Bascome
Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, in the United States, Baltimore Blast head coach David Bascome led his team to Milwaukee to take on the Wave at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena. The indoor soccer clash promised to be a thrilling encounter, and it certainly delivered.
The Blast faced an uphill battle from the outset, falling 3-0 behind at the end of the first period. However, Bascome's team displayed remarkable resilience, staging a spirited comeback. They outscored the Wave 3-2 in the second period, demonstrating their attacking prowess.
The second half of the match saw both teams trade goals, with each side scoring once in both the third and fourth periods. Ultimately, the Blast's valiant efforts were not enough to overturn the early deficit, and they fell to a 7-5 defeat. Despite the loss, Bascome's tactical acumen and the Blast's fighting spirit were evident throughout the match.
The contrasting results for the Bermudian players and coach highlight the diverse experiences of Bermudian athletes competing on the international stage. While the Binfield contingent faced disappointment in the UK, Bascome's Baltimore Blast showcased their resilience in the US. Both experiences, however, provide valuable insights and opportunities for growth, contributing to the development of Bermudian football on a global scale.
