Paul Rodrigues Jr., Jordan Vieira, and their Eckerd College Open Sailing teammates faced challenging conditions as they hosted the Mendelblatt Team Race at the Doyle Sailing Center, ultimately finishing in sixth place.
The event, held on their home waters, saw Eckerd battle through frustratingly light winds on day one. Despite the tricky conditions, the team managed to secure a 4-5 record, demonstrating their resilience and tactical awareness.
Victories against Citadel, Florida State, Jacksonville, and NC State provided glimpses of Eckerd's potential. Carter Morin, Rodrigues Jr., and Vieira took on the skippers' roles, while Avery Guck, Lily Schwartz, and Tia Soultanakis formed the team's crew.
Eckerd's strategy saw them secure strong finishes in several races. Against The Citadel, Florida State, and Jacksonville, they achieved impressive first and second-place finishes in each matchup, with the remaining boat finishing fifth, fourth, and sixth respectively. A notable 1-3-4 winning combination against NC State highlighted their ability to adapt and execute under pressure.
However, the day belonged to Charleston, who delivered a dominant performance, winning the event with an 11-1 record.
