David Jones Sr., founder and president of the Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Association (BMRA), has been a driving force behind the development of motorsports in Bermuda. His passion for racing, ignited in his early childhood, has led to a lifetime of dedication to the sport.
Early Inspiration:
Growing up in Warwick in the 1970s, Jones Sr.'s love for motorcycles began with rides on his father's Triumph. Watching street races on Middle Road and organized events at PHC Stadium further fueled his passion.
Teenage Years and Racing: By 16, Jones Sr. had his motorcycle license and was modifying mopeds for weekend races with friends. Witnessing the dangers of street racing firsthand, he decided to pursue professional road racing.
Professional Racing Career: In the 1990s, Jones Sr. honed his skills at the California Superbike School and the American Motorcycle Institute in Daytona Beach, Florida. He competed at major racetracks across the southeastern United States, achieving notable success, including a victory at Roebling Road Motorsports Park and an impressive top-10 finish at Daytona International Speedway.
Founding of the BMRA: Upon returning to Bermuda in 1997, Jones Sr. founded the BMRA to promote organized and safe motorcycle racing. He spent years lobbying the government for a dedicated motorsports facility, culminating in the establishment of the Bermuda Motorsports Park in 2004. The park now hosts a variety of motorsports events, including motorcycle road racing, karting, motocross, and remote control car racing.
Recognition and Legacy: In 2019, Jones Sr. was inducted into the Bermuda Motorsports Hall of Fame for his significant contributions to the sport. He continues to inspire and mentor young riders, leaving a lasting legacy on motorsports in Bermuda.
