Under bright, sunny skies, the Harness Pony racing season returned to action at the National Equestrian Center on Vesey Street, delivering an afternoon of thrilling races and close finishes.
The excitement began with the very first race, which required a judge's ruling to determine the winner. Robert Lopes, driving War Machine, was declared the victor in the 1:04 & Faster Time Bar Class, clocking a time of 1:03&2. Kirista Rabain, driving Red October, incredibly recorded the same time, making for a dramatic photo finish.
Heat Five provided a moment of concern when Candyce Martins, driving Rockin My Business, had a spill. Showing great sportsmanship, her opponent in the race, Robert Lopes driving ItsAllAboutMe, opted not to finish.
Last week, a horse came within a fraction of a second of the track record of 1:01&1. This week, fans witnessed another near-record performance when Lopes, this time driving War Machine in Heat Seven, crossed the line in a blistering time of 1:01&4.
Rookie driver DJ Burchall continued to impress in his debut season, guiding Kool the Fire to victory in Heat Two with a time of 1:07 flat.
