Daniel Phillips and the No. 18 Arizona State University (ASU) Men's Tennis team suffered their first defeat of the season, falling 6-1 to the top-ranked Texas Longhorns in a challenging road contest.
Despite the loss, ASU continued their strong start in doubles competition, securing the doubles point for the third consecutive match. This early lead provided a glimmer of hope for ASU, but Texas proved too strong in singles play.
A highlight for ASU was the impressive victory by Slovenian duo Bor Artnank and Matic Dimic, who upset Texas' seventh-ranked doubles pair in the ITA polls with a 7-5 win. Phillips and Tanner Povey also contributed to the doubles success, improving to 3-0 on the season with a victory in the second position.
However, the momentum shifted in singles competition, where Texas showcased their depth and talent. Phillips, playing in the number five singles spot, faced a tough challenge against Oliver Ojakaar. Despite a valiant effort, Phillips fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
This defeat serves as a learning experience for the Sun Devils as they face top-level competition. While their doubles success is encouraging, they will be looking to improve their singles performances in upcoming matches.
