Can Smith Build on Rhode Island's Fairytale Start?

IslandStats.com
Rhode Island FC exceeded all expectations in their Inaugural season, with Bermudian coach and general manager Khano Smith leading them to the USL Championship final. Now, as they prepare for their sophomore year, the question on everyone's lips is: can they replicate that success?

Smith, a former Bermuda National Team Captain with MLS experience as a player, faces a new set of challenges in 2025. The opening of the 10,500-capacity Stadium at Tidewater Landing brings increased scrutiny and the pressure to fill seats. Furthermore, replicating the achievements of a debut season that captured the imagination of Rhode Island's sporting public will be no easy feat.

However, Smith has already proven his ability to build a competitive squad and foster a winning culture. His astute recruitment, exemplified by the recent signing of USL Championship All-League midfielder Maxi Rodriguez, suggests he can attract top talent to Rhode Island.

The 42-year-old's coaching credentials are impressive. Before taking the helm at Rhode Island FC in March 2023, Smith honed his skills with Orlando Pride in the National Women's Soccer League and as an assistant with Birmingham Legion FC in the USL Championship.

While the new stadium presents a challenge in terms of filling seats, it also offers an opportunity to grow the club's fanbase and establish Rhode Island FC as a force in US soccer. If Smith can continue to deliver results on the pitch, the fans will surely follow.

The 2025 season promises to be an exciting chapter in Rhode Island FC's young history. With Khano Smith at the helm, they have the leadership and ambition to build on their dream debut and establish themselves as a consistent contender in the USL Championship. The eyes of Rhode Island, and indeed the wider footballing world, will be watching with interest.
