Bermuda's National cricket team got their ICC Men's T20 World Cup Americas Sub-Regional Qualifiers campaign off to a strong start with a convincing 42 run victory over Argentina in a warm-up match at the Hurlingham Club.
After being sent in to bat by Argentina captain Hernán Fennell, Bermuda posted a competitive total of 154/6 in their 20 overs. Onias Bascome was the star of the innings, smashing 49 runs off just 31 balls, including five massive sixes. His explosive knock provided the backbone of the Bermuda innings, and he was unfortunate to be run out just short of a well-deserved half-century. Franz Bur was the pick of the Argentine bowlers, taking 1 wicket for 16 runs from his 2 overs.
In reply, Argentina struggled to keep up with the required run rate and were restricted to 112/8. Alejandro Ferguson top-scored with 30, but the rest of the batting lineup failed to fire. Jonte Smith was the destroyer-in-chief for Bermuda, taking an impressive 4 wickets for 20 runs from his 4 overs. His accurate bowling and variations in pace proved too much for the Argentine batsmen.
This victory will give Bermuda a significant confidence boost heading into the qualifiers. Their batting looked powerful, with Bascome leading the charge, and their bowling attack, spearheaded by Smith, proved to be highly effective. With momentum on their side, Bermuda will be looking to carry this form into the tournament and secure a spot in the next round of the qualifiers.
