Six young footballers from Bermuda recently competed in the Surf Cup International tournament in Salou, Spain, gaining valuable experience against top international competition.
The players, all part of the International Development Academy (IDA) Bermuda program, represented IDA Valencia teams in the Under 17 and Under 15 age groups.
The Under 17 team, featuring JahZion Taylor and Dakayo Leverock, advanced from the group stage to the Gold Championship bracket. Their run ended in the semifinals after a penalty shootout loss to Nastic Sports Academy B.
The Under 15 team, which included Xavier Thomas Bassett, Roman Wilkinson, Ibraheem Talbot, and Zydon Lightbourne Furbert, competed in the Silver Championship. They were defeated by Elite Football Academy in the quarterfinals.
“Over the course of the event the players got to play against and watch some very strong teams and top clubs in their age group from around the world,” said Richard Todd, who provided a summary of the tournament. “The experience will have helped the players to grow and aid their development as they aspire towards achieving their football goals.”
Todd expressed gratitude to the International Development Academy for facilitating the players' participation through its partnership with IDA Bermuda. He also noted that future opportunities will be available to the players as a result of their involvement in the tournament.
