In a thrilling contest, Koa Goodchild and the Howard University Women's Soccer teammates etched their names into the program's history books, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) 2 - 1 to capture their first-ever Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament championship.
The first half saw both teams trade opportunities, each registering three shots. However, it was Howard who broke the deadlock in the closing moments of the period. A well-coordinated attack involving seniors Melea Earley and Zoe Moore culminated in reigning NEC Midfielder of the Year Samantha James outpacing the FDU goalkeeper to slot home the opening goal.
FDU responded with determination after the interval, leveling the score at 1-1 with a long-range effort that found the top corner of the net. Undeterred, Howard answered swiftly. Just 20 seconds later, senior Kyra Bolden restored their advantage, driving towards goal and slotting home what proved to be the game-winner.
Despite being outshot 10-7 by FDU, Howard's resolute defense, anchored by NEC Defensive Player of the Year Rachel Suttle and conference Goalkeeper of the Year Trinity Knox, held firm. Knox made three crucial saves, bringing her career total to an impressive 156, securing the historic victory for the Bison.
