The Great Sound provided a thrilling battleground for young sailors as the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club hosted the 2024 Bermuda Optimist & National Championships. Miguel Power emerged triumphant after an intense eleven-race series, showcasing exceptional skill and consistency to claim the coveted title.
Power navigated the challenging conditions with mastery, never finishing below sixth place in the competitive 33-boat fleet. He secured an impressive seven race wins, complemented by two second-place finishes and a fourth and sixth place. With sailors allowed to discard their worst result, Power finished with a net score of 15 points, solidifying his position at the top of the leaderboard.
Thomas Mcbain and Nina Gotfredsen, the leading female sailor, both finished with 31 net points, showcasing their talent and competitive spirit. Mcbain secured two victories and two second-place finishes, along with three third-place finishes, highlighting his consistent performance throughout the regatta. Gotfredsen capped off her impressive regatta with a victory in the final race, adding to her three second-place and four third-place finishes.
In the Green Fleet which saw racing in the Hamilton Harbor, James De Couto delivered a dominant performance, winning eleven of the seventeen races sailed. His exceptional consistency earned him a net score of 33 points and a well-deserved place on the top step of the podium. Jacob Beale secured second place with 80 net points, while Maven Lightbourn rounded out the top three with 99 net points.
The 2024 Bermuda Optimist & National Championships showcased the talent and determination of Bermuda's young sailors, promising a bright future for the sport on the island.
